Abstract

Since gaining independence from the British Crown in 1947, India has faced many negative consequences of the partition: from the Indo-Pakistani wars to inter-ethnic clashes in the state. The article analyzes the evolution of the views of the political leadership of India in the field of national security, studies the transformation of conceptual approaches, as well as ways and methods of responding to changing geopolitical situation. It is noted that the doctrines of the types of armed forces of India are developed taking into account existing threats and new challenges to the country's security such as international terrorism, uneasy relations with neighbors – Pakistan and China, problems of ensuring stability within the country and countering separatism and others. At the same time, there was no main element – an officially adopted unified national security strategy, as a harmonious system of views and practical measures for their comprehensive implementation, which does not allow India to achieve the goals set by the military and political leadership of the country to create favorable conditions for the development of the economy and the solution of socio-economic problems, strengthening the position of India, both in the region and the world as a whole.
