The article is devoted to the organization of intellectual work associated with the creation of scientific and scientific-journalistic texts by lawyers, which makes it possible to refine the circumstances of their writing. Based on the analysis of the memoir heritage, such components of professional intellectual activity as work in Russian and European libraries, at home, as well as communication with close colleagues on professional topics are considered. Professional work of intellectuals in the period under review had both «ideal» features associated with the need for it, and generated by the need to receive remuneration for it, which affected its organizational structure.
