The article narrates the history of the Scientific Commission on the History of Labor in Russia which existed within the structure of the Petrograd Council of Trade Unions in 1921-1925. The author analyzes the composition of the commission, its methodology and research program as well as the interaction of the commission with its trade union management. The main conclusion of this research is that the commission had a high level of independence from trade unions as well as from the control of the Bolshevik party. The commission consisted of prominent historians and economists who shared the same research approach that placed utmost importance on the analysis of archival documents.
