Japan in the Far Eastern Policy of N. N. Muravyev-Amursky

Abstract

The article is devoted to the diplomatic mission of the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia N.N. Muravyev-Amursky to Japan in August 1859. As is well known, after the conclusion of the Russian-Japanese Simoda treatise in 1855, Sakhalin Island remained unlimited, which created a threat to Russia’s Far Eastern shores and, especially, the mouth of the Amur river. Muravyev was sent to Japan to resolve this issue and demanding that Russia recognize ownership of the island. The Japanese side insisted on its previous position – the division of Sakhalin by 50 degrees north latitude. The only diplomatic mission of Muravyev to Japan was not crowned with success, but at the same time, the governor-general proceeded from the fact that Russia should assert its rights to Sakhalin exclusively by peaceful means.
