The article analyzes the practice of appointing officers of the Gendarmerie Corps to the Irkutsk province since the establishment of a permanent gendarme presence in the province. The personalities of the first gendarmes were established and their brief biography was given. The study is based on the use of narrative and comparative historical methods. The source base of the article was the preserved formal lists of gendarmerie ranks, orders to the military department and separately for the Gendarme Corps, and separate legislative acts of the central government. In conclusion, some patterns are noted in the practice of appointment to gendarme posts.
