Abstract

The article considers the results of many years of research by the Japanese archaeologist and historian Kobayashi Yukio (1911–1989) in the field of the origin and development of the ancient Japanese culture of Kofun. The general characteristics of the Kofun period (3rd –7th centuries AD) as an important stage in Japanese history are presented. The relationship between the Kofun culture and the culture of the previous stage in the history of Japan, Yayoi, is described. In the course of studying the problem of origin of the Kofun culture from the point of view of Kobayashi Yukio, attention is focused on several points: the time frame of the Kofun period, the socio-political and economic reasons for the emergence of this culture, cultural influence from the mainland and Northern Kyushu.
