to Korean Migrants to the Russian Far East in the Second
Half of the 19th Century

Abstract
Resettlement of Koreans from northern Korea to Russian territory has been important
in the development of the Russian Far East. In the first decade after the Amur region and Primorye
was included in the Russian Far East, there was an acute shortage of labor. In this regard,
before the Russian administration faced with the task to develop the Far Eastern suburbs and the
establishment there of strong peasantry. The measures taken by the Russian authorities to provide
protection and food aid to displaced persons in many ways contributed to the further relocation
of Koreans in the Russian Far East.
