The First European Look at Kofun Culture: William Gowland's Late 19th Century Explorations of Japanese Burial Mounds

Abstract
The article examines William Gowland's contribution to the study of the Japanese Kofun burial mound culture. The works published by W. Gowland, including the monograph “Dolmens and Mounds of Japan”, are analyzed. The characteristic features of W. Gowland's scientific work, the main results of his study of the Japanese burial mound culture, and an assessment of W. Gowland's activities in the study of kofun in Great Britain at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries are noted.
