Abstract
The article describes the main stages and features of the historical development of Irkutsk
province for the entire period of the region's existence as part of the Russian Empire. The analysis of
the administrative configuration and borders of the province, the geographical location, the number
and composition of the population, the first measures of the young Soviet government to change the
administrative configuration in the east of the state is given.
