Abstract
The publication examines the causes of the spread of infectious diseases among convicts in Eastern Siberia in the late 19th – early 20th century. Numerous facts of infection of the population by prisoners or persons released from places of detention have been systematized. Prisons and penal servitude have become a source of diseases such as typhoid and typhus, tuberculosis, anthrax, etc., mainly due to non-compliance with sanitation and personal hygiene standards.
