Formation of the Chukotka Okrug as part of the Kamchatka Region in 1909

Abstract
The article shows the reasons for the formation of a new administrative-territorial unit (Chukotsky Uyezd) on the territory of the Chukotka Peninsula as part of the Kamchatka Region. The stages of adoption of the law of June 27, 1909 “On the administrative reorganization of the Primorsky Region and Sakhalin Island” are highlighted. Particular attention is focused on the report of the Commission for the Review of Legislative Proposals of the State Duma of the Russian Empire, which substantiates the need to form the Chukotka District with an independent administrative apparatus. The article describes the results of the activities of the North-Eastern Siberian Society, organized for the purpose of exploration and development of minerals in Chukotka. The staffing level of the Chukotka district administrative and police department. The study is based on documents from the archival collections of the “Council of Ministers (1905-1917)” (F.1276), “State Council Financial Commission” (F.1158) and “Department of General Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs” (F.1284) of the Russian State Historical Archive.
