Russian America in the Memoirs and Historical Journalism of the Decembrist V. I. Shteyngel

Abstract
The article describes the participation of the Decembrist V. I. Shteingale in the study of events in the Far East at the end of the 18th – first decade of the 19th century. Even as a child, he witnessed the events in Kamchatka, served on the ships of the Okhotsk Flotilla in his youth, was a direct participant in the formation of the Russian-American company, and was familiar with many of its leaders. It is noted that his life impressions and involvement in great events became the basis of his literary and journalistic activities. The struggle against the arbitrariness and lawlessness of the Siberian authorities, the desire to change the situation in the administration and economy of the region for the better led him to participate in the Decembrist movement. Realizing the importance of the events in which he had to participate, he sought to make them available to the general public. His notes and articles from the Siberian period became a significant contribution to the history of the formation of Russian America. It is concluded that the Decembrist's creative legacy is of great scientific value, and he himself can be recognized as one of the first historians of the Russian-American company.
