History of the Chinese Encyclopedia “Yongle dadian”

Abstract
The author of this article is attempt to analyze the history of preparation of the Chinese encyclopedia “Yongle dadian” and also to clarify the total number of volumes which were preserved. More than 2000 compilers participated in the preparation of the encyclopedia. The publication contains materials from 8 thousand works which covers Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, history, medicine and philosophy; the total number of hieroglyphs was about 370 million.
