Abstract
The article is devoted to the analysis of oral histories recorded by Tsendiyn Damdinsuren, the first Mongolian scientist who began collecting ancient sayings, stories, narratives (more than 170 oral histories). Oral stories recorded from various people during the development of oral literature and historiography in Mongolia, as a rule, belonged to the genre of “ancient tales”. However, Damdinsuren called them “aman ogulleg” – “oral narratives” – and associated them with historiography rather than oral literature, emphasizing their historical significance. It is concluded that it is appropriate to consider the oral histories of Ts. Damdinsuren as a source of historical research.
