Creation and Establishment of the Irkutsk Regional Branch
of the Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and
Cultural Monuments (1966–1968)

Abstract
The article highlights the creation of the Irkutsk regional branch of the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments. The state authorities realized the scale of
shortcomings in the preservation and use of monuments and decided to attract financial and intellectual resources of the public to eliminate them. Based on archival documents, a description of the
main activities of the Irkutsk branch of the VOOPIIK is given: restoration of monuments, organization of archaeological excavations, creation of museums, preservation of the architectural appearance
of Irkutsk, etc. The most active members of the department are indicated.
