Abstract
Archival documents, newspapers, and fragments of memoirs allow us to reconstruct the
Irkutsk episodes of the biography of one of the captured Austro-Hungarian officers, Andras Wilhelmovich Hamburger, born in 1890. The general history of World War I prisoners of war in Eastern
Siberia is also briefly covered. Many foreigners were burdened by their forced idleness. Prisoners
who had been teachers, doctors, lawyers, engineers, photographers, and musicians before the war
willingly worked in their respective fields in Siberia. The authors' search for diverse references to the
person in question can serve as a model for similar research on other prisoners of war.
