Japanese Drift-net Fishing in the Russian Far East and Russia-Japan Fisheries Relations

Abstract
The article examines historical and contemporary aspects of Russia-Japan fisheries relations and analyzes the use of fishery as an instrument of bilateral diplomacy. A special attention is paid to the problems of drift-net fishing and marine poaching, which in the recent years have significantly reduced populations of salmon in the Far East. In conclusion the author highlights the recent impact of environmental factors on international relations.
