Forts-Sacred Places in the Structure of Sacral Concepts of the Ancient Population of Cisbaikalia

Author(s)
А. V. Kharinsky
Abstract
91 forts have so far been discovered in the territory of Cisbaikalia. The forts are mostly concentrated in steep regions of the Angara valley and its tributaries, in the Upper Lena and on the Baikal shores. The forts were slightly used for the military and defensive purpose. They were mainly ceremonial centers. Hence they are referred to as “forts-sacred places”. The forts–sacred places were built on the headlands or in the mountains that overlooked the surrounding area. The ritual ceremonies were performed there in order to get support from the patron spirits. The sacred territories were protected from enemies by the embankments and fosses.
