The little-studied archival documents of the R-250 Foundation “Buryat-Mongolian Ripresentative Office at the Presidium of the VTSIK RSFSR” of the State Archive of the Buryat Republic under the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the RSFSR, Moscow” of the State Archive of the Republic of Buryatia study the territorial development of the republic’s capital, Verkhneudinsk (renamed Ulan-Ude) since 1934. The leading role of the city of Verkhneudinsk in the system of the national economy of the Buryat-Mongolian Republic is emphasized and the difficulties associated with the improvement of living conditions and improvement of the city are indicated. The article identifies the problems of spatial development and expansion of the residential fund of the city at that time and at the same time examines the plans and results of the activities of the city development authorities in the southern and western directions, due to the land areas occupied by the settlements of Zaudinsky and Settlement. The archival materials highlight the role of the central organs of the Soviet government in resolving issues of changing the territory of Verkhneudinsk.
