Abstract

The aim of article is to determine the significance of periodicals for the readers of Irkutsk and to analyze its influence on the formation of historical consciousness and socio-political views of the inhabitants of Irkutsk. Basing on the statistical analysis of the materials of the state archive of the Irkutsk region, the author had concluded that the magazine “Russian thought” had been the most popular magazine among readers of the city public library from 1895 to 1921, both in terms of the number of requirements and among each of the estates, the popularity of this magazine had been higher. Thus the content of the magazine was more interesting and attracted the reader's attention. As a result of the content analysis of the journal, the following regularities had been revealed: for the formation of the reader's certain opinion on political, social, economic and cultural issues, the content of the magazine was responsible for reviews of domestic and foreign policy in the “internal review”, journalistic articles and essays. Pre-revolutionary journalism had “preparatory” in nature: the editors allowed the development of revolutionary events, so clearly and indirectly promoted liberal reforms in all spheres of social and political life: working, peasant, women's issues, problems of education and education in the country. During the revolution, the magazine had been actively covering the events taking place in the country; it had been agitating the government for early socio-economic reforms, referring in its publications to the historical experience of revolutions in Europe. Many publicists have tried to answer the question, what was the revolution in Russia? What was its main result? And most importantly, how would events develop further? In the post-revolutionary period, one of the tasks was the actualization of the problem of national consciousness of Russians. To prevent the revolution, it was necessary to carry out reforms in foreign policy – to act to the best of their abilities, without neglecting the interests of the state and not to damage the economy and society. During the First World War, almost all the attention of the magazine had been focused on the events in the international arena. Since 1914 the “Russian thought” had been publishing a chronicle of events in the internal review, as well as a number of essays about the fact how the war had affected the European countries that had been in the center of hostilities. In General, in the issue of war, peace and revolution, the magazine categorically promoted the liberal way. It is important to note that Russian publicists tried to reflect and to summarize the successes and failures of Russian history, to find out what Russia is, to plan and predict the future development of our country. The editors of the magazine gave the reader an opportunity to look at the situations from different points of view and independently choose one or another position.
