The Population of Western Siberia in 1964–1970: Modernisation or Disorganisation?

Author(s)
A. A. Burmatov
Abstract

The article considers the challenges faced by the population of one of the largest regions of the Russian Federation – Western Siberia: the reduction of the total population, the fall in the birth rate to the level that does not provide simple reproduction of the population and the increase in mortality. The region was considered within the boundaries of the economic district of the same name at the time of the 1959 census. The sources on which the study is based are the official responses of the Territorial Authorities of State Statistics of the Regions entering Western Siberia to the author's request, as well as archival sources. The author summarized the data on the regions and the calculation of indicators of natural movement in the region as a whole in accordance with the methodology of the state statistics Committee of the Russian Federation. In this form, the information was not published and was introduced into scientific circulation for the first time. Much of the data was previously used exclusively "for official use" and was not available to researchers. Thus, the purpose of the article is to restore the dynamic series of population movement indicators in 1964-1970 and to analyze the evolutionary changes in the demographic sphere in Western Siberia during this period.
