Features of the Development of the Press in the “Colonial Period” of American History (1765–1775)

Abstract
The article analyzes the “Colonial period” in the history of American press. The author examines the growing politicization of local presses against the backdrop of sanctions adopted by Britain against its colonies: the Stamp Act and the Townshend Acts. Newspapers are systematically moving from the state of practicing “reprinting news” to independently determining the topic and tone of publications. Against the backdrop of unpopular British acts, a new generation of publishers is emerging, whose attention is aligned with the American “Patriot” movement and it is easing out newspapers and magazines, that sympathetic to Britain. In order to take a more objective look at the “Colonial” period at a time of growing revolutionary struggle, the article describes the events that unfolded around the publications: “Boston Gazette”, “Massachusetts Spy”, “Boston Chronicle” and etc.The author comes to conclusion that the growing popularity of S. Adams's patriotic ideas became widespread in publications and led to a large-scale restructuring of the press. Borrowing European bourgeois values entails the impossibility of further acceptance by the colonies of complete subordination to the metropolis.
