Abstract
The article examines the diaries of the Irkutsk librarian Nita Stepanovich Romanov (1871–
1942), published by the State Archives of the Irkutsk Region. N. S. Romanov is known to Irkutsk
residents primarily as a compiler of chronicles of the city. At the same time, being first the head of
the Irkutsk Public Library, and then an employee of the scientific library of Irkutsk State University,
he kept a diary throughout his adult life, in which he recorded in detail his actions and thoughts.
Along with the author’s inner world, Romanov’s diaries contain a lot of information about city
events, revealing the difficult everyday life of Irkutsk residents, which makes them a very valuable
source on the history of the socio-economic and cultural life of Irkutsk in the 1920s–1930s.
