Visual Image of the First World War in Russian Illustrated
Magazines 1914–1918

Abstract
The visual material typical for the Russian journalism of the First World War period is
analyzed, using the example of publications in the illustrated magazines “Niva”, “Ogonyok”, “Rodina”, “Sparks”. The common and special features of the photographs published in these magazines are
revealed. Several functions of photography are identified in the studied journals: informative, didactic, mobilization-patriotic, psychotherapeutic, pragmatic, attention retention function.
