Abstract
The article is devoted to Sergei Nikolaevich Usov (1891–1966, Ryazan), a well-known teacher of foreign languages, who developed a unique method of teaching Russian to Chinese students and Chinese to Russian emigrants. Describing his biography, the authors write about Usov’s teaching at Russian higher schools in Harbin, e.g. at the Russian – Chinese (Harbin) Polytechnic Institute and the Law Faculty as well as his publishing activity (about thirty educational and methodological works, including a summary of his experience in teaching spoken Chinese). It is emphasized that in a short time the teacher created his own school that was based, alongside his teaching methods, on the idea of indissoluble connection between the national language and culture.
