Abstract
This article examines the formation and development of a network of advanced rural general education schools in the Ural Region in the 1920s and early 1930s. The network, facilities, staffing, and curriculum are examined. Schools for peasant youth are assessed as the primary type of general education institution in rural areas, providing basic agricultural knowledge in addition to general education. The authors evaluate schools for peasant youth not only as general educational institutions but also as a stronghold of ideological work among peasant youth. The reasons for the return to traditional general education schooling in the mid-1930s are cited.
