Abstract
The results of the study of the personal correspondence of the city mayor V.P. Sukachev are presented. This made it possible to reconstruct the ideas of the head of a Siberian city about the problems of developing public self-government at the end of the 19th century and the role of the city mayor in them. It was revealed that the greatest importance was attached to activating the activities of the Duma, establishing constructive relations with the regional administration, and developing the urban economy taking into account best practices.
