«Heavyweght Capitalists»: Image of Siberian Merchant in the Regional Periodicals of the Second Half of the XIX Century

Author(s)
E. V. Komleva
Abstract

The article analyzes information about Siberian merchants from regional periodicals of the second half of the XIX century. The published materials clarify biographies of certain merchants, reconstruct details about their life and business. Periodicals reflected such unpleas-ant features of Siberian merchants as desire for profit, egoism, passivity in public affairs, dis-honesty in commerce, feeling of permissiveness, ignorance, avarice. Nevertheless, the society was aware of the important role of the merchants' trade and initiative for the development of Siberia, had high expectations for the possessors of money capital, encouraged them for chari-table giving, and criticized actions that undermined the social interests.
